On August 9, the People Power Party (PPP) will hold a national committee and appoint the chair of the emergency response committee, handing the party’s leadership over to the emergency committee.
At 9 a.m. this day, the People Power Party held an online national committee and passed an amendment of the party’s constitution, which grants acting party leader Kweon Seong-dong the authority to appoint the chair of the emergency committee. The party used an ARS method to vote on the amendment. At 2 p.m., the party’s lawmakers will hold a video conference and announce the emergency committee chair nominee. They will then share their opinions on how to shift the party’s leadership over to the emergency committee. When the national committee ratifies the nominee, the People Power Party will officially fall under the leadership of the emergency committee.
Five-time lawmaker Joo Ho-young is a strong candidate for the emergency committee chair. The PPP plans to hold a standing national committee before the end of the week and appoint the members of the emergency committee. The emergency committee is expected to officially launch as early as August 12.
According to the party’s constitution and regulations, if the emergency committee is established, the party’s Supreme Council, which is the previous leadership, will be dissolved and leader Lee Jun-seok automatically dismissed. Lee announced that if the national committee decides to have the emergency committee run the party, he will take legal action and file for a court injunction suspending the validity of the party’s decision. He is scheduled to hold a press conference on August 13.
