North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s second daughter accompanied him a second time to a public event involving nuclear weapons. Chairman Kim, who had appeared with his daughter for the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Hwasong-17, on November 18, was with his daughter again at a ceremony celebrating the successful launch of the ICBM.

On November 27, the Korean Central News Agency reported, “Our respected comrade, Kim Jong-un took a picture with the people who contributed to the successful test launch of the new intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-17,” and said, “Our beloved general secretary appeared at the site with his precious child.” Just like when he first disclosed his daughter, Kim appeared holding his daughter’s hand. Intelligence authorities believe the girl at the event was Kim’s second daughter, Kim Ju-ae.

When Kim’s daughter first appeared before the public, she let her bangs down and wore a white down jacket, but this day, she wore a black coat with a fur collar, and her hair was neatly combed to one side. She displayed a more grownup style resembling first lady Ri Sol-ju. Chairman Kim showed his affection toward his daughter by gently linking arms with her and firmly holding her hand.

The sight of Kim’s daughter shaking hands with a military commander was also released. The commander bowed and respectfully extended his hand, while Kim’s daughter stood straight and held the hand with both hands.

North Korea released images of Kim with his daughter at an event involving nuclear weapons for a reason. The North Korean leader is trying to show that he has created a secure environment with nuclear weapons where the future generation can live without being threatened. A South Korean government official said, “He is trying to convey the message that he is developing weapons, such as intercontinental ballistic missiles, to secure the people’s livelihoods and the peace and stability of the future generation.”
