A, the grandson of former president Chun Doo-hwan, disclosed the luxurious life of the Chun family on social media. A said, “I think my grandfather is a slaughterer. He is not a hero who defended the country, but just a criminal.” He claimed he was exposing his family secret “to help reveal the criminal and fraudulent acts that my family is probably engaging in.”

On March 15, A posted a video of a woman, presumed to be Chun’s widow, Lee Soon-ja, playing indoor golf on Instagram. A claimed that the facility in which the woman was playing golf was an indoor “screen golf” room inside her residence in Yeonhui-dong. A also posted a picture of B’s wedding. B was the child of Chun’s daughter, Chun Hyo-sun. A explained that the picture was one of an “extravagant wedding,” and wrote, “I wonder where the family of Chun Doo-hwan, who claimed to have only 250,000 won, came up with the money for such an event.”

In April 1997, the Supreme Court sentenced Chun to life imprisonment and a fine of over 220 billion won for treason, insurrection, and homicide for the purpose of insurrection according to the Military Criminal Act and for bribery based on the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Shortly after the court sentence, prosecutors discovered and confiscated 31.3 billion won of Chun’s property. Chun was later released on a special pardon. He appeared in a trial to specify his property in April 2003 and claimed he only had 290,000 won in savings and refused to pay the remaining fine.

A also wrote about his father and Chun’s son, Chun Jae-yong. He wrote, “Currently, Chun Jae-yong is in the legal process of becoming a U.S. citizen,” and argued, “He is pretending to be a preacher to escape the eyes of the law.” He also mentioned his uncle Chun Jae-man, Chun Doo-hwan’s third son. A said, “Chun Jae-man is currently running a winery in Napa Valley, California,” and wrote, “A winery is not a business you can enter unless you really have an astronomical amount of money. It reeks of black money.”

A claimed to prove his identity by posting family pictures including photos of him with Chun Doo-hwan, his passport photo, and his student ID. He also disclosed the fact that he currently worked in an accounting firm in New York. In addition, A posted pictures and disclosed the real names and profiles of acquaintances as well as his family and argued that they engaged in illegal activities, such as sexual crimes, drugs and corruption in school admissions. Some of his posts were deleted after they were reported.

In a video, A argued that he himself was a criminal and mentioned that he once tried to take his own life to escape from the pain and his sins. He said that his family would try to discredit him by taking advantage of his history of psychiatric treatment and said, “I was diagnosed with depression and ADHD and received treatment since last January. I was in the hospital for a long time, and after they said there was nothing wrong, I was released and have been working well for several months now.”
