Kim Jong-un, "Let's Continue with the Good Atmosphere"

Kim Jong-un (photo), chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea showed that he was pleased with the senior delegation's visit to South Korea and said, "It is important that we take this good atmosphere to the next level and continue to accumulate excellent results." His words suggest that North Korea will continue and strengthen its efforts for peace to improve inter-Korean relations, so all eyes are now on North Korea's next move.

On February 13, the Rodong Sinmun conveyed that Kim spoke these words after receiving a report from the high-ranking delegation including Kim Yong-nam, chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly and Kim Yo-jong, deputy director of the party's Propaganda and Agitation Department on February 12.

Kim Jong-un mentioned that he was impressed with the effort and sincerity that South Korea showed to the senior delegation as well as the North Koreans taking part in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Kim said, "It is important that North and South Korea take this good atmosphere of reconciliation and dialogue, which we have pursued with an intense desire and common will, and continue to accumulate these excellent results." He then provided a guideline, ordering his officials to specifically present the direction for better inter-Korean relations as well as practical measures necessary in each area.

Cheong Wa Dae did not release an official comment. A key Cheong Wa Dae official met with reporters and said, "We don't have a separate position to announce. North Korea has their way of handling things, and we have our ideas and plans."

However, the government did express expectations for change from North Korea. According to spokesperson Kim Eui-kyum, President Moon Jae-in said, "The United States is also looking at inter-Korean talks in a positive light and has stated its willingness to talk with North Korea," in a summit with Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis at Cheong Wa Dae this day.

The Cheong Wa Dae official said, "Compared to the past stance of maximum pressure, PyeongChang and inter-Korean talks have provided a big momentum, bringing the U.S. closer to our position. Based on this judgment, we are keeping an eye on the situation in a positive light."
