Incident at Inhun High Triggered by Hatred of Feminists Grows to a “Political” Battle among Adults

"Some teachers at school are forcing certain political ideas."

The so-called "ideological dictatorship" at Inhun High School, a public high school in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, is growing out of control. Early this month, A and several students held a demonstration inside and outside the school claiming that a teacher was suppressing students who opposed the incumbent government. The incident was known when some media outlets featured the story. This led to the intervention of conservative organizations and YouTubers, turning the incident at Inhun High School into an "adult fight" with political colors going beyond the school fence. When the problem escalated, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education provided special advice to the school. On October 24, an official from the Seoul Office of Education said, "We plan to conduct an interview to see if the incidents that some students mentioned really did occur."

Several students including A argued that a teacher called people who believed the news on Cho Kuk pigs and dogs and that the teacher forced anti-Japanese thoughts during a marathon. Meanwhile, many other students at Inhun High refuted A's argument saying they were "exaggerated," and that there was no such incident. This day, the Inhun High School student council released a statement and said, "We will solve the school problem within the school. Do not take advantage of this politically." The school said, "We have never forced any ideology on the students."

The incident at Inhun High first started at WALIH, a student club at the school, which A formed and actively took part in since March. WALIH is a national union of clubs seeking gender peace and the WALIH that A formed was a branch of this organization.

Initially, a teacher was assigned to WALIH and the group engaged in normal activities, but problems emerged when the arguments and activities of A and his friends were criticized from within the school for distorting gender equality and for reflecting hostility towards feminism. Recognizing this, the teacher overseeing the club said he could no longer supervise the club and stepped down. According to current regulations, clubs freely formed by students have to close if they don't have a teacher to instruct them, so WALIH was in the process of shutting down. In May, A began making claims about "ideological dictatorship" and "feminist dictatorship."

Several posts on social media showed glimpses of A's actions in the past. In a column he wrote on social media, A said, "Saying that women are weak is distorting gender. In 2017, there were more men among the victims of violent crimes. Yet the women manipulate statistics on date violence to maintain the default that women are victims and instigate the people." The opinions that A and his friends claimed were collected from WALIH discussions included "Let's recognize the biological difference between men and women," "Men are adventurous; women are empathic and have motherly love," and "The gender equality education that students currently receive distorts the concept of masculinity and femininity."
